SuCo Spotlight July ’25 – Kara Burns
This month, SuCo wants to spotlight our Sr. Director of Affiliate Management, Kara Burns. Starting in 2020 (during one of the craziest years for SuCo), Kara came in with limited experience, but a driven attitude no one could beat. Her hunger to learn and master the craft of performance marketing is what has propelled her success here at SuCo, now leading our entire affiliate program just four years later. Kara is known and loved across the business, making every interaction lasting, energizing and positive. She brings that same spirit to our 300+ active affiliate partnerships, building trust, deepening relationships, and solving some of the most complex issues in the affiliate marketing world. On top of it all, she represents SuCo globally at conferences and women-led industry events as a true ambassador for the brand. Saying Kara gives 150% to the business every single day is an understatement. She continues to better her best and has no plans of stopping any time soon. Take a minute to learn a little more about Kara…
What’s one mistake you’ve made as a leader that taught you something valuable?
Early on, I believed I had to carry everything on my own to prove I was strong and capable. I took on too much, thinking that was leadership. It wasn’t. It led to burnout and disconnection. I’ve since learned that powerful leadership is rooted in trusting your team, asking for help, and creating space for others to rise. That shift changed everything – from how I delegate to how I connect.
Who has had the greatest influence on your leadership journey, and why?
Right now, I’m part of a high-performance development group called Execution Code, led by JJ Villar. His mentorship is actively shaping who I’m becoming as a leader – challenging me to operate with discipline, presence, and vision. He’s helped me embrace a mindset of personal excellence and push beyond my own perceived limits.
Equally important, though, is the influence of my team. Their trust, resilience, and willingness to grow alongside me have been some of my greatest teachers. They influence me daily, reminding me that leadership isn’t just about vision; it’s about how you show up for the people walking beside you.
What’s one core value you always try to lead with, no matter the circumstance?
Authenticity. I don’t believe in performative leadership. I believe in showing up real, direct, and heart-first. Whether it’s celebrating wins or navigating tough conversations, I lead with truth and I encourage my team to do the same.
What’s a fun fact about you that most people don’t know?
I organize AA meetings at major affiliate marketing conferences. While it’s a way to support others, it also creates a space where I can belong. In an industry where drinking is often the default, these meetings are a reminder that choosing a healthy lifestyle isn’t just acceptable, it’s powerful. They allow me to show up fully, stay grounded in my values, and lead from a place of authenticity.
Also obsessed with learning, soulful books, and nothing beats a homemade dessert.
Do you have a favorite quote or mantra that keeps you grounded?
One mantra that keeps me grounded especially when I’m tempted to get defensive or reactive is: “Bless them and change me.” It reminds me to lead from curiosity, not ego, and to treat every interaction as a chance to grow, even the tough ones.
